NEW YORK (WABC) -- Pedestrians in New York City are used to plugging their ears because of screeching sirens. Now, the NYPD has a plan to help save your hearing.
A new rumbler siren system is now being installed in all new police vehicles.
It emits vibrations that pedestrians and drivers can feel, along with a lower decibel siren.
Police say the new sirens were extremely effective in a study and will reduce noise.
By summer, 500 cars will be equipped. Eventually, 5,000 vehicles will have the new siren.
